In tailoring, basting is jargon for the act of loosely and temporarily sewing together layers or components. This step is used to check fit while preventing any errors occurring in the permanent seam.
Assembly
We use a simple white basting thread to keep the components together for your interim fitting. At this point, we have only begun basic interior construction such as shoulder pads/wadding. This fitting enables us to check the fit against the original pattern.
Adjust
The client performs the fitting wearing a dress shirt and suit pants. We perform a visual inspection, re-measure as required and make notes with chalk marks on the fabric to call out any necessary alterations.
Peace of mind
Given that the suit is only informally pieced together, any changes like lengthening/shortening, button positioning and even pattern construction can easily be made – something not possible with a made-to-measure suit.
